PARK COMMISSION
January 18, 2010
The regular meeting of the Park Commission was called to order at 6:37 p.m. in the Albany Village Hall by Chairperson Wayne Stemple. Members present were: Stemple, Rod Sutherland, John Briggs, Mark Riedel, Jim Mauerman, and Larry Ommodt. Also present was Jon Runaas.
Proof of posting was verified.
MINUTES: Motion by Briggs, seconded by Sutherland to approve the minutes of the previous meeting. Carried.
PUBLIC APPEARANCES: There were none.
CONCESSIONAIRE CONTRACT: We continued our discussion of possible changes to the Concessionaire contract. We did not see anything that was of a major concern, but wanted to further clarify one item and address an issue from last year. After a short discussion, a motion by Stemple, seconded by Sutherland to make the following two changes to the contract:
1. Add to item 6 – “In case of an emergency, the Concessionaire will contact the Police”; and
2. Add to item 8 – “f. Ball Park lights are to be turned off 15 minutes after the last game, except for those that are needed to close the stand.”
2010 SUMMER EMPLOYEES: Stemple informed the members that all of the 2009 workers have agreed to return for 2010. Motion by Riedel, seconded by Sutherland to hire these people back for the 2010 season at the same rates: Cindy Mauerman – Rec Director; Tyler Bauman – Rec Director’s Assistant; Jamie Stephenson – Caretaker; and Justin Mueller – Concessionaire. Carried. We have not had any response to the ad to hire a commissioner to run the leagues. We will continue to search.
DOWNTOWN LIGHTS/TREES: Runaas shared with us information concerning changes to lights in the downtown and the possible impact on the trees. We all agreed that we would hate to see them removed. It was suggested that we work with Alliant Energy to see what they can do to help keep the existing trees or to assist in the selection and cost of replacement trees.
Runaas also discussed with us the possibility of having a curbside pickup of tree branches from the recent snow storm. Since this would be from private property and not village park land, it was felt that this was not something that the Park Commission should take on.
FUTURE ITEMS: We received a request from Terry Astin as to what they might be able to do to help the village out as an Earth Day/Arbor Day project for the students. We discussed several different areas that could benefit from volunteer workers. These included pulling garlic mustard, staging downed timber in the woods for later pick up, cleanup behind the recycling center and other areas of the village and raking the village parks.
We discussed the number of times that the grass is cut. We need to make sure that it is cut no more than is needed and that areas like the parks could be done less frequently. This would be a judgment call and based on how fast the grass grows.
Sutherland asked that we think about a picnic table for the dam portage. Runaas will gather information and bring that back to the next meeting.
ADJOURN: Motion by Stemple, seconded by Briggs to adjourn. Carried.
7:34 p.m.
