JOINT RECYCLING COMMITTEE
October 18, 2010
The regular meeting of the Joint Recycling Committee was called to order at 5:45pn in the Albany Village Hall, 205 North Water Street, Albany WI by Chairperson John Grochola. Members present were: Grochola, Peggy Boeck, David Dowden [Ex-Offico], Fred Baertschi, Rod Sutherland and Keith Hobson.
Proof of posting was verified.
MINUTES: Motion by Boeck, seconded by Sutherland, to approve the minutes of the previous meeting as printed. Carried
FROM THE BOARD MEETING:
1) eWaste:
a) Informed committee that Village Board voted on location and date for this event.
OPERATIONAL:
1) Identify how we can be more efficient at Recycle Center?
a) Dave suggested that we advertise/promote recycling. See newspaper articles for additional information.
RECYCLE POGRAMS:
a) Update on newspaper articles?
a. The newspaper and newsletter has published recycle information and upcoming dates for eWaste with “RecyclethatStuff.”
b. Dave brought up the fact that we need to emphasis recycling more, some people are “too busy” to recycle.
c. The Committee discussed publishing what the fines are for not recycling. The group does want to “strong arm” the issue so we will start emphasizing the importance of recycling.
b) Chemicals/Hazardous Waste:
a. We need to do something; Dave reported problems getting rid of the oil.
b. The firm in Madison (Jacobi?) that used to take it does not want it any further; not clean enough.
c. Suggestion to contact "First Student” in Monroe at (608)329-7007 talk to Sherri or Greg to see if they can use it.
d. Keith will check with Township to see if they can use it.
e. On Committee task list for village to work on during month.
c) Wisconsin’s new e-Waste Law – follow-up on “RecyclethatStuff”:
a. Reference information under “…Board Meeting.”
b. New date is 11/6/2010.
c. Copies of brochure shared with committee members.
d. Discussed making these brochures available to people at election polls.
d) Battery Recycling
a. Information on battery recycling from http://www.biggreenbox.com/ and http://www.batteryrecycling.com/ was shared with committee members.
b. These firms charge for services, prepay for box that you fill and send to firm for disposal.
c. Dave believes that Behr in Monroe accepts batteries.
d. Dave has a separate container where he collects batteries.
e. We want to emphasis this fact to residents.
f. Discussed lead acid car and tractor batteries.
g. A motion by Hobson, and seconded by Sutherland, to begin charging $1.00 for car/tractor batteries beginning 1/1/2011. Vote taken, four (4) in favor, one (1) no vote. Carried.
ANNOUNCEMENT AND FUTURE AGENA ITEMS:
a) Futures
a. Can not accept oil filers after 1/1/2011.
b. The township dropped off more tires found along road side.
ADJOURNMENT: Motion by Boeck, seconded by Baertschi, to adjourn. Carried.
