The Albany Police Department is a part-time Police Department with departmental coverage for about 140 hours per week. When Albany officers are not working, the police coverage is provided by the Green County Sheriff’s Office.

The Albany Police Department has three full-time sworn officers; Chief Robert J. Levitt, Sergeant James Placek, and Patrol Officer Ritter. Chief Levitt is a retired Police Chief from Illinois and joined the department in October of 1998. Chief Levitt is a 30 year veteran police officer. Chief Levitt has a Bachelor’s Degree and has attended over 2000 hours of training during his career. Sergeant Placek joined the Albany Police Department as a full-time officer in January of 2000. Sergeant Placek came from the Monticello Police Department and has a Bachelor's Degree. Officer Ritter came from the Brodhead Police Department and joined the department in November 2004. Officer Ritter has an Associate Degree. The department also has five part-time officers. Officer Fields, Officer Mankowski, Officer Williams, Officer Heiman, and Officer Ringelstetter. The part-time officers are only used to fill in for full-time officers that are off and to work special events.

The department has two squad cars and equipment to service all of the Village’s Police Protection needs. The department is radio dispatched by the Green County Sheriff’s department and residents need only dial 911 in an emergency to have a police officer respond. The department boasts a Community Service program for youthful offenders, provides house watch services, and co-operates with the Green County Sheriff’s department in the DARE program. The department conducts all of its own investigations and recently certified Sergeant Placek and Detective Ritter as evidence technicians. All officers are certified intoximeter operators and the department has it’s own intoximeter from the State of Wisconsin.

The Albany Police Department moved into new quarters in February of 2001. The new facility is high tech and should serve the department needs for many years to come. The Albany Police Department motto is to Serve and to Protect. The Albany Police non-emergency telephone line is (608) 862-3255, the fax number is (608) 862-1184, and 911 for emergencies.
